12/19: Car ride. What did you see? How did it smell? Did you eat anything as you drove there? Who were you with?
It's the beginning of 2009. My husband (D), son (L), and I drive from our house in western Massachusetts to New Haven, Vermont. We're in the final 15 minutes of our three hour trip.
At this point, L who is seven months old is still awake.
I offer him a maple teething biscuit. He finishes half and tosses the rest on the floor. Then, in utter frustration, L screams. His first tooth is about to come in.
Exhaustion fills the air, we all inhale.
"It's okay," I say, "we're almost there."
D switches the music to Tom Waits. L quiets down for the last few minutes before we pull into the driveway and park.
D gets out of the car and picks L up.
"Let's make snow angels," D says.
We brush the snow with our arms and legs like marionettes and then run carrying L inside.
