december 9—zakuski

I’m participating in Gwen Bell’s #reverb10 challenge this month which means 31 days filled with daily writing/photography prompts meant to reflect on the past year and at the same time look ahead.

December 9 – Party Prompt: Party. What social gathering rocked your socks off in 2010? (Author: Shauna Reid)

This isn’t about a party that I went to, although there were a few good ones. It’s about the one I still want to throw. With only a few weeks left in December, I think this party will go on the wish list for next year.

A winter celebration. Zakuski (little morsels in Russian) is a tradition of serving small cold and hot dishes either before or as the main meal. Snow. Pickled and Root vegetables. Friends. Dr. Zhivago.

The menu will look something like this:

Georgian beans in plum sauce

Russian Black Bread and Flat Bread

Warm waxy potatoes

Mushroom zakuski

Eggplant caviar

Red Cabbage Salad

Green Bean Salad

Hard boiled eggs

Pickled things: beets, chiles, cucumbers, radishes, red onions

Paskha (Russian-Style Farmers’ Cheese)

Vodka martinis

Any ideas for dessert?
