Hello, there. It’s been a long week. I baked two cakes:chocolate and carrot in preparation for a cake contest tomorrow, helped Luke recover from a mean cold, worked and somewhere in the middle of all that, I found a few things I thought you might like.

reading Labyrinth, a short story written by Roberto Bolano published in a recent New Yorker issue—the story is pure genius—told from a narrator who as he looks at a photograph, imagines the entangled lives of the eight people seated at the table

watching how to make classic pesto over at Kinfolk

planning what to cook first from these books Inspired Vegan, Ancient Grains for Modern Meals, Bean by Bean, Ripe (available in March)

thinking this gooey apple upside-down cake and this lemon ricotta pine nut cake (that Jess introduced me to) both deserve a place at the table

mixing starter together for this walnut & rye sourdough bread (if you haven’t broken into the sourdough bread scene yet, here’s your chance—check out Tara’s sourdough starter to learn the basics)
