Morning. L left for school. Time for C’s second breakfast, oatmeal with raisins and honey. He ate the small oatmeal rounds I placed in a bowl with a spoon, determined to feed himself. The light around 8:30 am was always spectacular. Pure gold. Camera out, I snapped a few images before he tossed the spoon then bowl overboard. In other words, all done. I cleaned him up and he took off for the living room. The bathroom door was open, shower turned on. I followed C into the closet size room. He stood in front of the tub pushing the curtains back ready to climb in. I held him steady. The laptop was balanced on the porcelain sink. Yo La Tengo’s Popular Songs played. “I just realized they’re the soundtrack of my life,” D said. Mine too.
I’m giving this yearlong project a spin. Undoubtedly, I will fall and pick up again. Knowing this makes it easier. Still, I plan to show up to record a short photo and story of my day. You’re welcome to join me. I’d love it really. We can give each other high fives and geek out with a hashtag (#ayearofus), not because everyone is doing it, but because we’re doing it, together. Showing up every damn day to make this creative habit real.
