Long before sunrise, I heard a scratching at the front door followed by a thud. The door swung open and I heard the hinges creak and something larger than our petite cat stroll in. It went straight for the cat’s dish. It was likely a raccoon but I couldn’t be sure and couldn’t make a fuss with flashlights and banging pots since the whole house would have woken. Eventually, I fell asleep. Thunder rolled in at noon, not long after I heated up leftover Chinese food in the oven: rice, scallion pancakes, and vegetable dumplings.
